UFC 94 Flashback: GSP, Machida Gain VictoriesReigning lightweight champ BJ Penn entered his main event battle against welterweight kingpin Georges St. Pierre looking to become the first man in UFC history to simultaneously hold titles in two weight classes. GSP never gave him the chance to make history, as he stopped Penn after four increasingly dominant rounds to retain his belt with a TKO victory. Both fighters had considerable fan support, with vocal, flag waving delegations from the Hawaiian Islands and Canada in evidence. During ring introductions, both men received enthusiastic cheers tempered with a few boos. After the opening horn sounded, however, the Penn backers had little to cheer about while the champions supports broke out in G-S-P chants on several occasions. Boxing guru Freddy Roach recently praised Penn as the best technical puncher in MMA, but he had no opportunity to bring this weapon to bear as he had trouble finding the range from the outset. GSP mixed up his look perfectly, either staying just outside Penns range using his 6 reach advantage effectively or more often smothering his opponent on takedown attempts. St. Pierre was unable to complete any takedowns during the first round, but easily dictated the pace and style of the bout. GSP began to assert his dominance in round two. He got a takedown early in the frame and began to mount a ground and pound assault while moving around in Penns legendary guard with frightening ease. At this point, it was apparent that GSPs superior strength and insane physical conditioning were going to figure prominently in the outcome of the fight. The eventual outcome was foretold between rounds two and three, as the obviously exhausted Penn required a pep talk from his entourage that his fatigue was all in his head. Across the cage, GSP calmly sipped water looking for all the world that he could go 12 rounds. Round three was similar to the previous one, with GSP taking his opponent to the mat with a decreasing level of resistance and mauling him with punches and elbows once he got there. His complete control over the BJJ black belt Penn was incredible, but hardly surprising given the way that GSP dominated four time NCAA All American wrestler Josh Koscheck on the ground during their matchup. The fourth round was a wall to wall rout for the welterweight champion, who started by effectively trading strikes with Penn before taking him down once again and resuming his highly successful ground based attack. At this point with GSP moving around at ease and Penn mounting little resistance it was apparent that the challenger was physically spent. St. Pierre almost ended the fight on the ground, as referee Herb Dean repeatedly reminding Penn that he needs to fight back. Penn survived the round on instinct alone, moving around just enough to keep the referee from stopping the proceedings. After the horn sounded to end the fourth round, however, it was evident that Penn had nothing physically or emotionally left and the fight was stopped by Dean on advice from the ringside physician. Displaying his characteristic class, GSP delayed his celebration until he had crossed the cage and kneeled by his vanquished foe to honor his competitive spirit. After a quick celebration among GSP and his team, he faced his next challenger in the person of Thiago Alves. In the co-feature attraction, Lyoto Machida kept his undefeated professional MMA record intact with a first round TKO victory over Thiago Silva. Silva had no answer for Machidas well rounded skills and unorthodox Shotokan karate based style. Machida took his opponent down and knocked his opponent down twice”all counters as Silva was coming forward and Machida backing away. As the first round entered its final seconds, it appeared that Silva started to ease up in anticipation of the horn. Machida used this opportunity for another takedown, and then nailed his surprised opponent with a powerful punch that ended the fight. The First Ever All-Round Dive ComputerA Suunto D9 dive computer is the model that should always be considered when looking for quality scuba diving equipment to the divers computer. We would like to give you helpful info so that you can make good decision while searching for a diving computer that will suit your needs. The D9 provides amazing features and functions compared to other basic models. In fact, it is known as the world’s first all-in-one computer for diving and has lived up to that name ever since its release. Prices may range from $1000 in fact some go as much as $2000, depending on the chosen options, and the merchant you buy it from. It is rated as an excellent computer by many people. All-Round Functioning The Suunto dive computer D9 can be worn as a watch on land and at any given time for any occasion, but when you are diving it has the gauges you need to keep track of depth, time, temperature, and no-decompression limits for several dives. There is an option that lets you switch from gauge and free diving modes. You can also choose from metric and imperial. This dive computer has a digital compass that lets you store several headings. This makes it better than a regular compass because of the memory. Deep and technical divers will be glad to use the D9 as it has the ability to handle three gas mixes during any single dive, including measurements up to 21% – 100% in oxygen mixtures. The Deep Sea RGBM can handle depths up to 200 meters and allows for safety stop features for the switches. Tests have found it to work as good as new even after hundreds of dives. Wireless Transmitter Features The first stage regulator can be connected to an optional wireless transmitter which converts the D9 into an SPG. Multiple transmitters to monitor the pressure of more than one tank can be used, however, it is only to be activated before the dive starts, or else you have to return to the surface to activate it. The D9 Suunto divers computer has a USB interface and the necessary software which is PC compatible, with which your dives can be easily logged and get a complete dive profile because it can store all of the relevant data, including photos from the dive. It is very interesting to compile information from individual dives, which also includes the sites, conditions and any other information you may want to store as notes. What Else to Know Almost the only drawback of the Suunto D9 is that its software is incompatible with Mac software computers. In addition to this minor flaw, the battery is rather costly and, since it is proprietary, can only be replaced by the service center or could just be supplanted with a wireless transmitter that can only be activated on the surface. But in general, this dive computer provides deep divers with everything they could want in a computer that they can wear on their wrists. It’s one of the best dive computers available for technical and deep dives. Ed J Price has had a marked interest in the sport of scuba diving for many years. Del Mar Racetrack: ‘Where The Surf Meets the Turf’Southern California’s Del Mar Racetrack has been somewhat forgotten by the general public in recent years, overshadowed by East Coast venues like Churchill Downs and Belmont Park. The reality is that the 72 year old track has a history to rival their better known counterparts. Operated by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and located 20 miles North of San Diego, its perhaps most famous for its iconic slogan “Where The Surf Meets the Turf” but that only scratches the surface of its star studded history. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club was founded by a group of well heeled enthusiasts in the mid’30s, and they immediately turned their attention to building a world class horse racing venue. The names that were instrumental in the creation of Del Mar include a whos who of American entertainment–most notably Bing Crosby, Oliver Hardy (of Laurel and Hardy) and Jimmy Durante. At the time the facility opened thoroughbred horse racing was the second most popular sport in America behind major league baseball, and Del Mar quickly gained a reputation for being a player in the industry. Additionally, the star power involved with the project also provided a trendy cachet that the tonier race courses back East lacked. Bing Crosby himself greeted patrons at the gate on opening day, and during the late’30s and early’40s it became a place to be seen for Hollywood A-listers and those who aspired for celebrity. In addition to known gambling enthusiasts like W.C. Fields, Edgar Bergen and Red Skelton, the Del Mar patrons during that time also included some of the top female stars of the era including Ava Gardner, Paulette Goddard and Dorothy Lamour. In’38, Del Mar hosted an internationally anticipated match race between Seabiscuit and Ligaroti. This event drew a record crowd and gained worldwide notoriety for the track. Seabiscuit won the $25,000 winner-take-all duel by a nose, and would forever be enshrined in the annals of American popular culture. Horse racing at Del Mar continued to be a smash until the facility went dark in’41 due to World War II. It would remain closed until’45, and for a time was used as a training facility by the military. After the war, Del Mar reopened with a bang. Following the surrender of Japan, President Harry S. Truman declared a national holiday for August 15,’45 and on that day Del Mar attracted over 20,000 fans through its gates who wagered what at the time was a record $958,476. The postwar prosperity was also a boon to Del Mar, which also benefitted from the Santa Fe Railroads daily Racetrack Special that brought bettors down from Los Angeles to enjoy a day at the track. During the latter part of the decade a new crop of Hollywood glitterati would flock to Del Mar, including Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Mickey Rooney and Jimmy Durante. Durante would become such a regular that the turf course at Del Mar would later be renamed in his honor. The annual race meet at Del Mar remains a highlight of the summer to this day. Del Mar remains one of the top tracks in the country, and have recently upgraded their facility with a state of the art grandstand and was one of the first tracks to install a new synthetic racing surface. What to Consider When Picking Boats and KayaksYou have to pick boats and kayaks depending on several factors. At the very least, you need to consider your activity, preference and water conditions. Since not all vessels are the same, picking just the right one for you can be tough. Here are a few options that you might want to think over. Rigid vs. Soft There are kayaks that are made of soft fabric. They can also come in more traditional rigid materials like fiberglass, plastic and wood. Some prefer rigid shells and hulls because they naturally give the impression of durability and strength. On the other hand, some may be afraid of riding soft shells because they imagine that these vessels are more susceptible to punctures. Depending on your boat brand however, soft shells can be very durable. Soft boats are not made of just any kind of fabric. The fabric used for them are usually of a tempered kind. Some boats also use layered fabric and pressure sealed seams to ensure boat strength. Inflatable soft boats are therefore good options too. Moreover, they are perfect for individuals on a tight budget since they cost less than hard shells. Portable vs. Non-Portable Portability is another thing to consider. Like other large equipment, boats and kayaks now have portable versions. Portable inflatable units are perfect for people who like to travel far to water sites or who do not have appropriate land transportation for moving boats and kayaks. Some inflatable units are so easy and convenient to use that they can be carried using carry bags and can be fully inflated in minutes for instant use. Portable units are also perfect for people who do not have large storage spaces. Portable boats can be dried, deflated and stored on a bag or shelf. Portable units though, are not for everyone. Some people may still feel more comfortable with non-portable rigid boats. That will not be a problem if you have the same preference. You just have to make sure that you have sufficient storage area, proper maintenance tools and appropriate boat or kayak transportation. Multi-Purpose vs. Single Purpose Some kayaks are made for a variety of purposes. Some tenders for example can be used for mild sport racing or leisure paddling. Some kayak models too can be used for riding the rapids, fishing and plain paddling. You can opt to have a multi-purpose vessel or you can go for a single purpose type. If you are multi skilled yourself, then obviously, a multi-purpose boat is ideal for you. You might have a number of different water hobbies that you would like to pursue. Hence, you need a boat that can cope with your many different activities. Some individuals though may prefer single purpose vessels simply because these are specifically constructed for a particular activity that they might want to excel in. High end kayaks for example are almost always the vessel of choice for riding class IV rapids. These outdoor water equipment or vessel come in various shapes and sizes. Choose yours carefully based on these basic considerations. What are the latest boats and kayaks in the market? Compare product specs, prices and get reviews of the best-rated kayak boats online. |
The MMA Legacy Of Helio GracieThe founding father of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and patriarch of the Gracie family, Helio Gracie, died in early 2009 at the age of 95. His influence in martial arts as well as the sport of mixed martial arts is mind boggling. The Gracie family name will forever be synonymous with Brazilian sports, jiu-jitsu, MMA and the UFC”not only due to Helios own accomplishments but the legacy he created both by training others and through his family. Helio Gracie began his training in mixed martial arts early, and by his teenage years was already teaching judo. While he had no problem mastering the theoretical aspects of judo, he found that many of its techniques were less effective for a practitioner with a smaller build. Along with his brother Carlos, Gracie began to work out his own fighting system by adapting many of judo’s techniques and making them more a product of leverage rather than brute strength. This led to the creation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), frequently called Gracie Jiu Jitsu in his honor. Gracie also had a professional fighting career of his own, taking on champions from other fighting disciplines in an early version of modern MMA. These bouts were grueling, unregulated affairs with rules that were often made up as they went along and time limits that seem barbaric by todays standards. By his own recollection, he had 15 fights against the top fighters of his day. These included pro wrestlers, boxers and other martial arts specialists. His most famous battle was against Japanese judo legend Masahiko Kimura, resulting in a rare loss for Gracie. Despite the setback, he fought bravely and may have actually enhanced his legend after refusing to submit to a reverse arm bar (the same move that now bears Kimuras name). Only after his arm was broken did his brother Carlos throw in the towel. Gracie’s greatest impact, however, may have been through his progeny which is an important part of Brazilian sports and mixed martial arts even today. Royce Gracie is well known as the first UFC superstar, while sons Rickson Royler, Renzo have also achieved considerable fame in professional MMA. At the time of his death, Helio Gracie was a 6th Dan Judo black belt and the only living 10th degree master of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The cause of Gracies death was officially given as natural causes. His last words will go down as a fitting envoi to a man who gave so much of himself to fighting: “I created a flag from the sports dignity. I oversee the name of my family with affection and nerves of blood. Ross Everett is a widely published freelance writer and respected authority on sports betting odds comparison. What to Look for in Inflatable Boats and KayaksWith outdoor water sports and hobbies, there is nothing more innovative than inflatable boats and kayaks. One obvious advantage with these vessels is that they have features and qualities that permit water activities that cant be possible with rigid hulls. Not all inflatable units are great though. If you want the best inflatable unit, you need to consider a few factors. A Name Behind It There is more to a product than the brand. There are many new product brands that are as good as established ones. You should however, have second thoughts about getting a kayak from an unknown brand name. After all, a good inflatable kayak can spell the different between enjoyment and disaster in the rapids. Before you buy a kayak, make sure that you are getting one from a trusted name. If you are unfamiliar with the brand name, take some time to do research. Guarantees and Warranties These are important service features that are part of every quality product. If you are not very familiar with a kayak brand, this is one of the aspects that you need to look for first. Although most quality inflatable boats rarely ever get damaged, some may come with factory defects. You could end up with a kayak with skewed kegs or one that tips too easily. A guarantee of some sort is your best consumer protection. Durability Features Do your assignment. Research on inflatable boats and kayaks and have a good look at them. Be sure that they have a couple of safety and durability features. They should for example come in reinforced, coated or multi layered fabric. Seams should preferably not be glued together but should instead be stitched or electrically sealed. Some products have durability tests that you can view or read about which can put you at ease. Portability Features Inflatable boats are supposed to be portable. This is what is most appealing about inflatable units. Some manufacturers though may recommend pre inflating units for transport or keeping them inflated for storage. This defeats the purpose of inflatable units. Users generally want one so they can easily lug their boats and kayaks around. Find out if a boat or kayak has a portable pump and how long it takes to inflate it. Independent Testimonials Loyal users of a good brand will not hesitate to recommend a good product. Good user reviews and testimonials are clues to a boat or kayaks quality. You just have to make sure though that what you are reading are independent opinions. Otherwise, you could just be reeled in by a paid review. Flexibility and Versatility In a sport or hobby that can be as unpredictable as the waters, a kayak or boat must be flexible enough to function in several situations. Depending on the boat design, you can have one for rapids riding, fishing and leisure paddling. You can quickly see how flexible and versatile a specific model is by looking through its product specifications and uses. If you are not sure about a boat or kayak, ask about it through customer service. Inflatable boats and kayaks are obviously great options you may want to consider. You will have better chances though of enjoying your water ride if you have just the right vessel on hand. What are the top inflatable boats and kayaks to buy? Polar RS200SD vs. Suunto T3c For Polar the most powerful advantage is its price. For a small tool that provides a lot of training advantages, such as monitoring heart rate, speed and distance, it carries a very reasonable price. Polar’s partnership with the International Triathlon Union (ITU) which came up with the black arrow design of the Suunto T3c, shows their commitment to the market. In essence, the Suunto T3c carries a lot of weight in the features and functions department while the Polar Rs200sd comes out tops in quality and style. Even great products like the Polar RS200SD and Suunto T3c have some drawbacks. The RS200SD lacks the altimeter and PC software feature that other heart rate monitors have. With the Suunto T3c, it could be the cost. But anyone who understands the purpose of a heart rate monitor would certainly claim both models as excellent picks in their price range. Sport Headphones Review – What Are The Best Jogging HeadphonesMany individuals like to work out to music but at the gym you need sport headphones rather than regular ones. Regular headphones will not stay in place and when you get sweaty the headphone may stop working. Also the design of sports headphones are designed so that the cord stays out of your way and you get the best sound quality and fit when playing sports and at the gym. Everyone’s music preferences vary and most will listen using their own mp3 player or iPod. But the headphones that come with your music player are not the best for listening during physical activity and you should invest in a good pair of sports headphones. The most important parts of the sports headphones are the sound quality, if they are sweat proof and a good fit. Nike Aero Sport headphones are sports headphones that are very easy to clean, sweat proof and will stay put no matter what sport or activity you are doing. The only concern is that the sound quality is not the best and for very long usage they can become a bit uncomfortable. The cord is placed to stay out of the way no matter what you are doing and these are a decent but inexpensive pair of headphones. For runners, the Sennheiser MX85 sport headphones may be the answer to cord wrangling and ear buds that won’t fall out. Designed for the jogger/runner in mind, these particular headphones are adjustable to fit different size ears. People with smaller ears might find these more comfortable. The Sony MDR-AS50G is a great affordable pair of sports headphones. They have good sound quality and have excellent fit. While these sports headphones may be the best fit of any available they can look a little funny as they do stick out of the head and can’t be concealed by your hair. The fit is so good that you do not even need the over the loop band to keep the ear buds in place. They are very comfortable for extended wear. You can obtain blue tooth sports headphones from Jaybird with their latest Jaybird JB-100 Bluetooth stereo headphones. The danger with blue tooth enabled devices is that you can lose the connection frequently. The ear buds stay in place with over the ear mounts. Blue tooth sports headphones will be pricey compared to other versions though these headphones can be used with your mp3 player or iPod. Blue tooth can be tricky to fit properly so make sure that these fit you well and stay put. The Arriva sport headphones use a great cord design so you never need to worry about the cord getting in the way. The ear buds stay put and are comfortable. The ear buds stay put because the cord wraps securely around the back of your head keeping everything in place. However if you want excellent sound quality then it is recommended that you go for one of their higher models as the sound quality is not the best at the cheaper end. Check out today’s discount on jogging headphones or even take a peek at the deals you can get on Headphones with volume control. |
