Choose: Picnic Or Barbecue? Are you thinking of throwing a party in the near future, but are not sure whether to have a picnic in the park or a barbecue party at home? People do enjoy both kinds of party, although some may have a first choice. One of the big differences between a picnic and a barbecue is often the food. After all, you are usually allowed to have a barbecue and cook food in your own backyard, but there may be restrictions on cooking food on an open fire in a park or picnic site for fire safety purposes, so most people take pre-cooked meats and sandwiches. There are advantages and disadvantages to both types of party, but we will begin by looking at the food aspect, as most parties centre around food. An advantage of having a picnic is that you will be able to muck in with your fellow revellers more, because you will have already cooked the chicken wings and legs and made the sandwiches the night before. You will have bags of sausage rolls and small cakes and all you will have to do is lay them out for people to help themselves. If you run out of sandwiches, people can make their own with the sliced bread that you will have brought just in case. The disadvantages of a picnic are that you also have to tie your time up the day before making all the food and you will need transport to get there with your hampers, bottles, flasks, plates, beakers, tissues, flannels towels and whatever else you normally take with you. People may not even like your selection of sandwiches and if you let them make their own with what you provide, there could be a terrible mess. Your sandwiches could also curl up overnight of go off in the heat of the day or in the back of the car. This is a particular danger with pork, chicken and eggs. You may have to erect a tent or rig up a shelter for those who can not stand strong sunlight. You may also have trouble with ants and wasps and the toilet amenities are often dreadful. Also if it begins to rain, you have little choice but to pack up and leave for home or a pub Barbecue food on the other hand is cooked there and then and cannot go off. The only danger is under cooking, but it is not too hard to get it right. There is not much chance of preparing vast quantities more than you need either as the chef will see when his food is not being taken away. This is one of the disadvantages of barbecuing though, someone needs to stand there all day and cook, although this can be done in turns and there is usually a string of men willing to show off their expertise as a barbecue chef. With a barbecue you have the advantage of cover if it rains and the toilets are better than in the park and if it gets chilly later on in the evening, you could use a patio heater to extend the party. Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with the outdoor heat lamp. The Remodeled Garage HeaterIf you have converted your garage into a workshop or home office, you are sure to want heating of one form or another. This is because most garages are not built to the same standards of insulation as the main residential building. However, that need not present a difficulty. You may even have the contrary problem during the summer, as garages often do not have windows, or at least large ones, either. Ventilation could be another matter that you will have to cope with, but we will come to that later. If you have a plentiful supply of dead wood, you could set up a pot-bellied stove, but you will have to vent the flue outside. This is very easily done, since most garage walls are only one brick or block thick. However, if they do not burn correctly, there can be a smell, which you may find disagreeable. Or you could use a paraffin/kerosene heater. They are cheap to buy and are easily portable. These heaters do not necessarily have to have a flue. They are easy to turn on as many of them employ an electric starter. Some also have a thermostat to regulate the temperature. They can be a hazard if there are children around as they can be tipped over. However, for most people, the problem would be the smell given off. You could use an electric hot air heater. They are quite cheap to buy, are very portable and do not require a flue, but they can create a very dry atmosphere and are costly to run. One of the most common choices these days is a gas heater. There are many different types of gas heater, but most run on butane or propane. Most of the models are fairly inexpensive. The main advantage of a gas heater is that they give consistent heat, are fairly cheap to run and are portable. Or at least many of them are. You could have one built in, but it is hardly worth it, unless you are using gas that needs to be vented. Propane gas heaters also come with or without thermostatic controls. A propane heater could also double as a patio or deck heater on chilly evenings. These gas heaters come in two forms: vented and unvented. The unvented models are the portable ones. They use the air from the room and the vented models have a flue that vents straight out of the garage. The slight disadvantage of the unvented model is that you have to keep the room airy at all times. Therefore, if you decide on a portable, unvented propane heater, you must leave a window partly open in order to allow the exchange of air and these heaters can be used as patio or deck heaters during the spring and autumn/fall. However, the vented gas heaters are fixed and have a flue attached, so they cannot be taken outside. Furthermore, if you decide on a vented model, you would be better off getting a professional in to install it for you by the book. Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with the propane outdoor heater. Caring for a Shearling CoatShearling coats are one of the warmest materials used in jackets. Not only are they warm, but everyone looks great in a shearling coat. Unfortunately, they aren’t cheap and with their price tag you definitely will want your coat to last as long as possible. There are several rules one must follow in order to keep your shearling coat looking as good as new for years to come. In this guide, I’ll share these simple rules to prevent any damage to your shearling coat. Never use a washing machine or dryer when cleaning your shearling coat. It’s always best to either dry clean or air-dry your shearling coat. Using these machines could seriously damage your jacket, if not ruin it. The second rule is a bit tedious, but it’s really not that tough. If you love your shearling coat, you’ll want to clean it pretty frequently. Depending on the amount of use you get from your coat, this may vary but shearling easily picks up dirt. The dirt settles into the shearling and becomes harder and harder to remove as it settles. With that said, the frequent cleanings will keep your shearling coat looking like its brand new! Winter goes hand in hand with fires and heating. Any source of high heat, especially an open fire can easily destroy your shearling and the leather. Never place your jacket near the fire or near any heating system. Keeping the color of your shearling coat is extremely important. These coats tend to loose color easily and the most common cause is the sun. With that said, never let your shearling jacket sit in the sun for long periods of time. If you’re coat rack is in front of a window, do not leave your shearling on this rack. In a matter of a few weeks, your jackets color can fade. Many people think it’s a wise idea to store your shearling coat in a plastic garment bag. This is a very bad idea as the shearling needs to breathe. Plastic will trap the moisture which can damage the coat. Always use a cloth garment bag and make sure it allows air to flow. When you’re hanging your shearling coat, always make sure there’s enough room. You never want to hang it in any contorted way, as this can cause permanent creases in the coat. Let it hang in a natural form and always use a stout hangar. People tend to hang coats on door knobs or other round objects, but I advise against this as well! By following this short list of rules, your shearling will look beautiful for years to come. It’s easy to forget some of these rules, but considering the investment you’re making in your shearling coat, it’s definitely worth following! Remember the Scooter? The Razor A scooter … What does that phrase conjure up in your mind? If you have kids, I’m sure that you’re already aware of the Razor A scooter series, but they weren’t around when we were children. However, the idea was, even though I forget the brand names from my childhood. I loved my two-wheeled, kick-powered scooter when I was young. Mum and Dad had their automobile, my older brothers had their bikes and I had my scooter. It didn’t go fast, but then, I didn’t go far either, but it was transport and it gave a feeling of freedom. I had my wheels and I was mobile! Well, the modern variety of that scooter is the Razor A scooter series. And they really are modern too! They are a long chalk from the simple scooters of years ago. The Razor A scooter series was introduced in the year 2000 and is sturdy, strong, collapsible and safe. The Razor A scooter series comes in several guises to suit different age groups, abilities and pockets. For example, the Razor A scooter is meant for children of six years and older, while the Razor A2 scooter, the Razor A3 scooter and the Razor Pro scooter are intended for older, heavier, more demanding and more skilful riders. With prices starting at about $25 none of them is over-priced. The Razor A scooter series is made from aircraft-grade light aluminium and weighs in at just six pounds. That’s light enough for any young child to be able to carry, if necessary, without risk of strain. It is also collapsible, which means that it is easy to carry under your arm, in the trunk of your car or on the bus. Storage is a doddle too. The Razor A scooter series is height-adjustable too in that the handlebars can be raised as your child grows up or if an older sibling wants a turn. It also has a heavy-duty braking system, which is obviously quite important since these scooters will easily travel at speeds of five or six mph on the flat and much more on a slope. Going down, that is. The Razor A scooter range also has lesser and greater stable companions. The Razor Kiddie Kick is intended for children younger than six and has a third wheel for greater stability, although it is just as strong and long-lasting as the Razor A scooter series. The Razor A scooter series is intended for ‘young-minded’ people from the age of six. I use the words ‘young-minded’ because it is quite the rage now, to put one in the car and scooter the last mile or two into work or college. That mile or two every day will save you fuel and give you more exercise over a prolonged period of time. After all, it all adds up, doesn’t it? Then, for those who want a bit more, there are the Razor E100(S), Razor E200(S) and the Razor E300(S), which are electrically powered scooters. The (S) denotes that they have a seat fitted. So, why not introduce your child to the idea of mobility with a Razor A scooter? Give your child the chance to look back on his or her younger years in 20-30 years time and remember rushing about at three-five mph on a Razor A scooter. Do you have great memories of your chilhood scooter? The Razor A scooter is the modern equivilent. Come visit our webweb site at http://razorascooter.com and find out more. |
Creating A Caravan Porch Awning For Your FamilyOne of the great products you can use to live outdoors regardless of the weather is an awning. If you’re looking to protect yourself from the weather and create a peaceful environment for your road trip, then a caravan porch awning is the way to go. Difficulty: Simple Directions Things Required To Build A Caravan Porch Awning: 1. Canvas tarp built to specifications 2. A roll of measuring tape 3. Rope (preferably nylon) 4. Stakes for tents 5. Adjustable tent poles 6. Scotchguard with weatherproofing capabilities Brainstorming Stage Using the measuring tape, determine your caravan’s length. How big do you want your awning to be? Canvas tarps can be bought in almost any size, but many are maybe nine feet in depth. Do your best to measure what size will be perfect for your use. Ordering Your Materials Call a canvas tarp dealer and speak with someone experienced with the various sizes of canvas tarps and their purposes. Let them know what your awning’s dimensions are going to be, and place an order that will match your caravan. Purchase What Leftovers You Need Any outdoors store should have tent stakes, poles and nylon rope. Be safe and purchase one hundred feet of nylon rope and six tent poles — that ought to be enough for any caravan awning. Try using pre-made pieces to make your building the awning that much easier. Get the pieces and items all together once that canvas tarp is delivered and get ready to put up your caravan porch awning — initially, at home. Using The Right Area Move your caravan into a big enough area to accommodate the size awning you’re going to build. Your best bet is to park over an area of soft earth. If you end up stopped over tar, you can use tent stakes and large metal nails to drive through the roadway. If you’re dealing with concrete, hammer a stake into a crack to avoid surface damage. Setting Up Your caravan Porch Awning Place your canvas tarp on the ground and arrange it so as to correspond with each side toward the proper corner of your caravan. Attach the tip of one tent pole into the grommet of the canvas tarp corner you have closest to the caravan. Make sure you lift the corner of your awning until it becomes vertical. Stake this pole into the ground, taking care to hold it in place until it’s securely in the earth. Putting On Your Awning Line Making an awning line isn’t complicated — use fifteen feet of your nylon rope and, at one end, make a loop and knot it tightly so it will remain at the appropriate side of the canvas. Be careful to use this loop to throw it over the highest point of your vertical pole, which should enable you to secure the other end with a stake, which will be pushed down into the canvas tarp by that loop. Be sure that your loose end rope is always hammered down with a stake. Finishing Your Remaining Materials This step simply involves using your last five tent poles to connect to the corresponding grommets. When all is said and done, you should have three awning poles for the front and rear. Keeping Your Awning Safe Last but not least, spray your canvas tarp with your Scotchguard. Make sure you give your caravan porch awning three hours to dry, and then apply a second coat. When it is finally all dry, your awning should be perfectly waterproofed for years. When you’ve finished using it, take the awning apart and store somewhere cool and dry. Protect yourself and your family from Mother Nature’s eccentricities while away on outdoor trips with caravan porch awnings. Get yourself a caravan porch awning now and experience the difference it will make so you can enjoy your holiday without being disturbed by it. Make sure you buy from websites that are genuine for the most reliable quality items. |

About the Lentek Mosquito TrapA very effective, yet somewhat pricey technique to get rid of mosquitoes is the Lentek mosquito trap. These units will set you back a little bit, but the great thing is they work. When it is a beautiful summer night, you want to spend your time enjoying the outdoors. Too many people instead are trying to swat away mosquitoes and making sure they don?t get bit. A Lentek mosquito trap can definitely help out the situation. Sure, there are other ways to get rid of mosquitoes temporarily. You can use a bug spray for example, but that stuff smells and feels weird. None of this type of mosquito prevention would be necessary if you had a Lentek mosquito trap. The best model to buy is the Lentek MK11G mosquito trap. There are others online, but this one is great. The price is around $300-400, but is well worth it. Let?s look at how it works. To run, the Lentek mosquito trap uses propane and electricity. A tank of propane can take care of about ? of an acre for a month. The lure of the machine comes from the way it pretends to be a human. The mosquito will be attracted to the body heat, moisture and carbon dioxide they think is coming from a human being, but in actuality it will end up caught in the trap. Since it works so well, the dead bugs start to add up. Fortunately, it is easy to change the filter and clean it out, no matter how bad the weather is. There are other models available as well. The Lentek Guard mosquito trap and the Lentek ? acre mosquito trap are both good if you have a smaller yard to cover. With all the best models available online, the next steps should be researching which one fits your budget and your area. Read more about the Lentek mosquito trap at mosquito killer. |
Fly Killers WorkIf you are looking for a fly killer, chances are you are like me and have had them bother you. Not only flies, but wasps and mosquitoes that can hurt your skin. Some of the other bugs might carry harmful bacteria. Since there are a lot of flies in my area, I knew I needed to take care of the problem. I researched a few fly killers and then began seeing the prices as very competitive. The options all seem plentiful and very easy on the wallet. They all seem to do a great job taking care of the problem as well. There are two distinct groups of people who need help when buying a fly killer. Let?s take a look at those. Bugs flying everywhere can constantly pester those who own a home or business. If you are looking for fly killers, that means you are tired of them being near your face or landing on your food. You want to clear your mind and get rid of them. Many business owners are also forced to install fly killers because of the law. This is especially relevant to restaurant owners because consumers do not want flies on their food. Both types of people looking for fly killers should be happy with the variety available. The most common type usually involves an ultraviolet lamp and a sticky glue board to grab the fly. Many people quickly want to know how much this will cost them. Basic fly killers can be bought for less than $50, while they can rise in cost all the way to several hundred dollars. This all depends on the size and technology you want. Finding a good price can sometimes be tricky, but I found my best success online. They always seem to have a better deal than a hardware store. Good luck on your search. I hope you get rid of the flies soon enough! Read about fly killer at mosquito killer tips. |
Looking for Snakes and ReptilesThere are few places in the world that haven’t been colonised by snakes and other reptiles. Snakes can be even found in towns, although it is only the friendlier ones that tend to survive human wrath. However, if you want to look for a few of the more uncommon snakes, you could look in parks and fields, on beaches or in rivers and ponds and even in the sea, depending on where you live, naturally, as sea snakes tend to inhabit warmer, tropical waters. You will need to be alert and train your eyes to spot even the slightest movement. Wear clothes of dull, drab colours and move slowly, stopping often to listen for movement in the grass or bushes. In the beginning, you will have many false starts, until you learn to differentiate between the sounds of the various animals that live or hunt in the grass. Snakes are not easy to locate, because most of the adventurous snakes get killed by frightened (and often ignorant) humans, but a good tip is to look for relatively damp areas in arid regions and, conversely, dry spots in damp areas. Look for where their prey might congregate. For example, near water for toads and frogs. Watch for frightened lizards or birds fleeing for all they are worth. And listen out for geckos warning each other of the presence of a predatory snake. If you have to move anything, at least don’t damage it and make sure you put it back as you found it. Two useful tools while out looking for snakes are binoculars (for tree snakes) and a snake-hook, which should also be used for moving bits of debris so that you don’t risk getting bitten by a snake or stung by a scorpion. A camera, a torch and a notebook and pen are quite, depending on how seriously you take your interest in herpetology. You could also take a rule or tape to measure your specimens and a few plastic bags and boxes to hold them while you are doing it. However, do not kill anything and do not take anything home with you either! Aside from it not being right to wander into their domain and cause them harm, it is frequently contrary to the law too. Be very wary of picking up any snake that you cannot definitely identify as non-poisonous. You could be a long way from anywhere and will probably not have any anti-venom with you. Since many snakes can kill within 30 minutes, you would almost certainly die. So, to summarize, go looking for snakes by all means. However, make your search calmly and wear inconspicuous clothing. Furthermore, wear strong, climbing boots to afford you some protection where you are most vulnerable and do not move anything you don’t have to. Use a snake-hook to move things if you have to; a tape, torch, camera, notebook and pen to record your experience and/or findings and a few clear plastic receptacles just in case you feel the need to pick something up. I hope you enjoy your search for snakes and other reptiles, but remember that they are not friendly and they are definitely not pets and be wary of bites especially when your search is not taking place in the grounds of a hospital!
